The Gluten-Free Lunch Box Blues

It can be a challenge living gluten-free (or with any other food sensitivity).
When Samuel was younger it was much easier because he was not yet subjected to peers that ate differently than him. Once he was in school full time, I had to negotiate with him about the lunch foods that I packed for him. I wanted to send healthy foods such as “green soup” which is a family favorite at our house but the mixture of cruciferous vegetables made his lunch smell sulfurous which then resulted in his peers teasing him. He came home and animately announced that I should never send that green soup in his lunch again.

Proud to Bee Gluten-Free!

It was a beautiful day. The sun shone above and the weather was perfect as 65 plus members of my gluten-free support group, Gluten Intolerance Group of Tri-Valley, marched for gluten-free awareness and pride. There were huge smiles and puffed up chests as we proclaimed our pride in reclaiming our health and well-being by removing gluten from our diet. Autism affects you too…not just the 1 in 42 boys diagnosed

When I saw this newly released statistic I cried….not only for the children but for the 1 in 42 mothers, who just like me five short years ago, received the news that their child has autism. I remember feeling like I was free falling into a deep black hole.  You can read more about that day here: Sammy and the day of his autism diagnosis.  I knew very little about autism at the time but I knew for sure our lives would never be the same. I now know that what seemed like at the time a devastating turn of events, took us on a journey that...

Got gas?

They say the average person passes gas 14 to 23 times a day. How they figured this out is a mystery to me and actually quite funny if you imagine how they actually conducted this study. During my gluten and dairy eating days, I could have probably tripled or quadrupled that figure.  After changing my diet, I can actually say that I very rarely passed gas…believe it or not.  When people ask me to share my most embarrassing moments, I first ask if they want the stories that are flatulence related or otherwise. Almost all my embarrassing moments...
