Tips for Dining Out Gluten-Free

Tips for Dining Out Gluten-Free

Who can deny the allure of dining out? It can be a fast and convenient meal. In addition, many social gatherings and celebrations are centered around food and restaurants. But for an individual with food sensitivities, eating out can literally be a health hazard. I tell my clients at the end of their 30 day elimination diet (in which they are not allowed to eat out) dining out GF is like flipping a coin…based on my experience there is a fifty percent chance you are going to get sick from an infraction or some other food reaction. In my opinion, the risk is too high especially if you...

Gluten-free dining at the San Francisco Giants game

Gluten-free dining at the San Francisco Giants game

Sammy and I ventured to San Francisco this week to attend the San Francisco Giant’s Autism Awareness game. Every year the Giants dedicate a game to autism awareness and donates a portion of the proceeds to Autism Speaks, an organization, “dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.” I recently heard that AT&T Park now has gluten-free hot dogs so we were super psyched to go. The last time I went to...

Paleo Cooking from Elana's Pantry Cookbook Review and Giveaway!

Paleo Cooking from Elana's Pantry Cookbook Review and Giveaway!

The arrival of this cookbook was perfect timing. I’ve been leaning into grain-free living for about four months now and have to say, I think it’s better for my body. From what I’m learning, I think most people that eliminate gluten, eventually eliminate all grains at some point. This cookbook is also dairy-free which is an added plus in our house. The best thing I liked about this cookbook is that the recipes are simple. I was able to find several good family meal options. I made the flank steak twice and the family gobbled it up. This super simple kale salad recipe is my...

Nourished…The Art of Eating and Living Well Maybe it is the heart shaped hands on the front of this cookbook or the title, Nourished, but the first time I saw it, I could sense the love infused in this cookbook. The author, Luna Paige Smith, did a beautiful job developing it. The photography is captivating and the recipes are unique, interesting and, well, “nourishing.” After eating gluten and dairy-free for over six years now, I am in dire need of recipe inspiration. Luna did a creative and loving job with her creations. I chose four recipes to try. Wild Arugula with...

GF Orzo Pasta Recipe Review and Giveaway

GF Orzo Pasta Recipe Review and Giveaway

I found this gluten-free orzo pasta recipe (below) on the TACA (Talk About Curing Autism) Web site. It’s the first time I’ve heard of gluten-free orzo type pasta. It’s amazing to me how many new GF pasta varieties are now available. The grainery that makes this unique orzo pasta, Edison Grainery, is located right here in the East Bay area, in Emeryville. They offer a really nice selection of gluten-free organic grains and pastas. I ordered organic amaranth (my “happy food”), quinoa flakes (for quinoa porridge), buckwheat and several bags of various GF pastas....

Green Bites Cafe – Restaurant Review

Green Bites Cafe – Restaurant Review

This little cafe in San Jose was recommended to me by a friend and colleague who is also gluten and dairy-free. As soon as I walked into this simple restaurant, I could feel the love. I was greeted immediately by the owner, Fenny. The gluten-free options were not apparent at first so I inquired about what gluten and dairy-free options they offered. Fenny was very helpful and made me feel right at home. This type of experience can be rare when dining out with special diet restrictions. Very often restaurant staff can be very rude and unhelpful. I even had a server at the Rainforest Cafe in...
