Sweet Treats…OMGoodness

Sweet Treats…OMGoodness

After my clients go through my thirty day elimination diet program, they often ask what I eat for a healthy “sweet treat.” Is there such a thing they wonder? In my opinion, we definitely need to control and minimize our sugar intake. This includes sugar from fruit and overly processed foods such as white rice but I also believe we can afford a little sweetness in our life if managed well. Here a few of my favorite indulgences.

Alter Eco gluten, dairy and soy free organic dark chocolate. My favorite variety is the quinoa bar. It has a Nestle’s crunch bar texture/feel to it. This bar gets an “OMGoodness” rating by me. It’s super indulgent. Most chocolate has soy lecithin in it so this bar is a rare find. They have several different bars available. Check them out here. WARNING: This chocolate is addictive. Use caution before trying. 🙂

Available at: Whole Foods Market, Draeger’s Market and One Earth (Danville)      PRICE: $3.00-4.00 a bar

Arbonne Fit Chews

Arbonne Fit Chews

Arbonne caramel fit chews…these too can be addictive. I love these gluten and dairy free chews. They are available in caramel and chocolate. My favorite is caramel.

licorice

Sometimes I crave the taste of black licorice. I was very distraught to find out that most licorice has gluten (wheat) in it. There are a few gluten-free licorice options on the market but this is my favorite. It has a bold flavor so be sure you’re a die hard licorice fan before trying. I also like that it is sweetened with molasses instead of sugar. Orgran black molasses licorice…available at the Natural Candy Store.

Ingredients: Molasses, tapioca starch, raw sugar, soy flour (GMO free), corn glucose, natural caramel color, vegetable oil (palm kernel), licorice powder 0.5%, vegetable gums: xathan, guar, aniseed oil, ascorbic acid.

COST: $5.39 a bag

Dairy-free Hot Chocolate

Dairy-free Hot Chocolate

I am a big fan of thick, dark drinking chocolate. When I became dairy free, I knew this was something I could not live without so I set out on a quest to find the thickest, darkest hot chocolate I could find. BINGO…Bittersweet Cafe drinking chocolate. OMGoodness….

Bittersweet chocolate is available online or in Oakland at their cafe. The last time I went to pick up my “supply” (of my chocolate fix), the cafe had a gluten-free chocolate zucchini bread which was another “OMGoodness” rating. It was so good. I don’t know if they offer it consistently though. TIP: I usually combine my Mariposa Bakery trip with my Bittersweet pick up to save gas money. I fix my Bittersweet drinking chocolate with coconut milk for optimum thickness but you can use any non-dairy milk or even just hot water. Drink with caution…it’s addictive.

candy-canes

Candy canes…who could live without candy canes during the holiday season. These are gluten and dairy-free and most  importantly, dye-free. Dye is Sammy’s biggest offender so we avoid it at all costs. They are also organic and free of high fructose corn syrup. Click here for more info.

Available at: Whole Foods Market

Stay sweet (and well).
