FDA announces new gluten-free labeling law

It’s been a long time coming but finally today the FDA announced mandatory labeling for companies that want to label their foods “gluten-free” (GF). Previously any manufacturer could put “gluten-free” on their packaging without any type of required third-party verification. The new regulation will assure that any food labeled GF on the packaging will test under 20 parts per million (ppm). The National Foundation of Celiac Awareness (NFCA) announced this past week its alliance with the Gluten-Free Certification program (GFCP) launching the first GF certification seal to cross national boundaries.
